The Theory of Change

Help us to reach our goal.

In order to create a non-violent society, people need to be healed from their trauma (Restoring mental health), but it is equally, if not more, important to implement programmes that would prevent violence and trauma. The restoring mental health element is also linked to prevention of violence. A study into the determinants of Violence against children and women, showed a direct link between Intimate Partner Perpetration and Childhood Trauma.  (Towards a More Comprehensive Understanding of the Determinants of Violence against Women and Children in South Africa 2016, Unicef /Department of Social Development).  Other determinants of gender based violence as one form of violence we seek to eliminate through this organisation’s work, are: attitudes supporting inequality between men and women, substance abuse and poverty.

We are very passionate about reducing and even eliminating violence in our communities.

In order to reach more people with support services, training in Psychological First Aid will be presented to community activists and volunteers. Thus we will work towards achieving a more caring society committed to address trauma. Various groups will be trained in our fields of expertise namely Trauma Support Work and Trauma Bereavement. We realise this is not a task which we could do alone. Therefore, we will engage with stakeholders locally, nationally and internationally through whom we would recruit clients and trainees for restoring mental health as well as streamline referral and service delivery pathways. We would utilise these established stakeholder structures and networks to engage collectively with communities through a unique combination of approaches including, stress relief programmes (for strengthening leaders), community dialogues, Asset Based Community Development trainings and community theatre. From these facilitation approaches we aim to restore human dignity and addressing structural violence through a community driven processes, which will lead to changing of community attitudes, advocacy for policy changes and community projects for socio economic development. The Trauma Centre would support, co-invest in, and link these community initiatives with the support of relevant stakeholders. The Trauma Centre theory of change assumes that a combination of these outcomes will lead us on the path of achieving or vision of a non-violent society with respect for human rights.
